Worum es geht

Learning to break a rule well requires understanding it first. This course moves through two approaches to oil figure painting: a rigorous engagement with the academic tradition, followed by a structured exploration of how that foundation can be stretched, subverted and made personal. A nude model poses throughout, and every participant receives individual feedback.

The first part is devoted to a single painting, built slowly in layers from first marks to finished surface. Then the pace changes: one new painting per session, each guided by a different theme. You need some painting experience and an interest in working from life; experience with oils, anatomy or a live model is welcome but not required. The course is taught in English, with support in German on request.

Das lernst du

  • Understand the internal logic of academic oil painting and apply it to the figure
  • Apply contemporary techniques, materials and conceptual starting points to the figure
  • Use composition, form, light or color as a deliberate way into a painting
  • Combine observation from life and learned technique into a personal visual language
